A random river, drawn to its true length

The River Picker chooses one of twenty great rivers at random — but instead of spinning a wheel at a list of names, you set a boat drifting down a cross-section of the world's water. Every river on it is drawn to its real length and ruled off in 1,000 km ticks, so the Nile stretches most of the frame and the Rhine is a short hop. The boat drifts, slows, and moors at one of them.

How it works

  1. Choose the rivers. Tap the ones you want on the water. All twenty fit at once, or narrow it to the shortlist you are actually choosing between.
  2. Cast off. Press the button and a small boat sets off downstream, the camera panning alongside it.
  3. Read the scale on the way. Each river's reach is drawn to true length with a tick every 1,000 km, so the comparison is on screen the whole time, not just at the end.
  4. The boat moors. The drift decelerates and stops at one river, whose channel floods from source to mouth and fans out into a delta.
  5. Take the result. A length ribbon unrolls and a plate drops in with the full name — and the answer stays on the page, with no popup unless you ask for one.

The twenty rivers, source to sea

A name on its own is a shrug — "you got the Orinoco" means more once you know it quietly leaks part of its own flow into the Amazon basin. Every result comes with its length, where it ends up, and a line on why it earns its place.

Why river lengths disagree

Look up the length of the Nile in three places and you will get three numbers. That is not sloppiness — measuring a river involves judgement calls that reasonable people answer differently:

  • Where does it start? A great river has many headstreams. Picking the longest, the highest or the most voluminous as "the source" can move the total by hundreds of kilometres.
  • Where does it end? In a delta the river stops being one channel and becomes dozens. Whether you measure to the head of the delta or the tip of the longest distributary changes the answer.
  • How finely do you trace it? This is the coastline problem: the closer you follow every meander, the longer the river gets. The measurement depends on the resolution of the map.

The Nile and the Amazon have swapped the top spot in credible sources for decades for exactly these reasons. The figures used here are the commonly cited main-stem lengths — good enough to compare with, and honest about being approximate.

And length is not size. By discharge the Amazon dwarfs everything — it carries more water than the next several rivers combined. By drainage basin it wins again. The Nile is long and comparatively thin, which is why "longest" and "biggest" are two different questions.

Why a boat on the water, not a spinning wheel

A spinning wheel is a pointer travelling a closed loop with the options sitting on that loop, and every slice is the same size regardless of what is written on it. For rivers that is a waste: the single most useful fact about a river is a length you cannot picture, and identical slices erase it.

So the stage keeps the proportions and the path is an open line. The boat starts upstream and drifts to wherever the draw landed, passing each named reach on the way, and the ending belongs to the subject — the winning river floods from source to sea and fans out at its mouth, which is what a river actually does.

Every inhabited continent, represented

The list is deliberately not just "the twenty longest", because that would be a roll-call of Asia and would leave out rivers that matter. Instead every inhabited continent gets a fair showing: Africa (Nile, Congo, Niger, Zambezi), Asia (Yangtze, Yenisei, Yellow River, Mekong, Indus, Brahmaputra, Ganges), South America (Amazon, Paraná, Orinoco), Europe (Volga, Danube, Rhine), North America (Mississippi, Colorado) and Australia (Murray).

That mix is also what makes the scale drawing worth looking at. A pure top-twenty would be a row of near-identical bars; this one runs from 6,650 km down to 1,230 km, and you can see the whole range in a single pass.
