Random Troll Picker

A random pick, straight out of a troll's nose

What Did the Troll Find? is a random picker with a very bored troll in charge. Press the button and he yawns, grabs a wand without looking, waves it about while humming… and pokes it straight up his own nose. Whatever stretches out on the end of that wand is your pick — Goblin Goo, a lost sock, a very grumpy fairy — and he will tell you, with a very red face, that it is definitely not his.

How it works

Choose the finds

All twenty-two are in to start with. Tap any to take it out, or add your own — names, tasks, anything.

Press the button

The troll yawns, picks up a wand without even looking, and waves it about while he hums to himself.

Oops

SHLK. Straight up his nose. His eyes pop, and he very slowly pulls it back out — with a stretchy ribbon of goo attached.

SPLORP

The goo snaps into a blob on the wand tip. That is your pick. He names it, hides it behind his foot, and denies everything.

Everything he might find

The goo comes out in the colour of what he found, so you can often tell before he says it.

The goo

Goblin GooBright green, slightly bouncy, and definitely a goblin's. Probably.
Frozen Dragon SnotSo cold it crackles. The dragon would like it back.
Wizard JellyWobbly, purple and faintly smells of old spell books.
Golden BoogerShiny, very rare, and absolutely not going in the treasure chest.
Volcanic Slime (Still Warm)Still warm. He is pretending that is normal.
Rainbow GooEvery colour at once. Very pretty. Very, very sticky.
Enchanted GlitterGlitter never comes out. Not even with magic.
Ghost SnotYou can see right through it, and it says "boo" very quietly.
Unicorn SnotPink, sparkly and smells like candyfloss. Somehow.
Bubble SnotIt blows a bubble all by itself. Then another one.

Stuck in the goo

A Tiny Magic CrystalGlowing, precious, and found in the worst possible place.
A Worm?!The worm is just as surprised as he is.
Something He Should NOT Have FoundA tiny golden key. Nobody knows what it opens. Yet.
Slime That Looks BackIt blinked. He blinked. Nobody is winning this staring contest.
A Lost Sock?!He doesn't even wear socks.
A Tiny Rubber DuckIt squeaks when squeezed and looks deeply offended.
A Very Surprised FrogNobody in the room is more shocked than the frog.
A Very Grumpy FairyShe was NOT finished with her nap.
A Snail on HolidaySunglasses on, sun hat on, rudely interrupted.
The Missing Puzzle PieceIt has been missing from the family puzzle for three whole years.
A Baby Dragon EggIt is warm, it is wobbling, and it just sneezed.
Another Wand?!A wand, found… with a wand. It's wands all the way down.

Ways to use it

  • The guessing game. Everyone calls out what they think he will find before you press the button. Right guess, one point.
  • Classroom brain break. Add your class's names or a list of quick tasks with "Add your own find" — whoever or whatever he pulls out goes next.
  • Drawing prompt. Draw what he found. A snail on holiday is harder than it sounds.
  • Story starter. Where did the golden key come from? Whose sock is it? Why is the fairy so grumpy? Write the story.
  • Party game. Put forfeits or prizes in as your own finds and let the troll hand them out.

Fair, even if the troll isn't. The find is drawn before he even yawns, with a cryptographically secure random generator, and the shield under the stage opens the provably-fair receipt for every draw. The acting is just for fun.

Frequently asked questions

He doesn't — the picker does, before he even yawns. The find is drawn with your browser's cryptographically secure random generator, using rejection sampling so no find is favoured, and the whole show is then played out to land on it. Every find that is switched on has exactly the same chance.

Twenty-two things: ten kinds of magical goo (Goblin Goo, Frozen Dragon Snot, Wizard Jelly, Golden Booger, Volcanic Slime, Rainbow Goo, Enchanted Glitter, Ghost Snot, Unicorn Snot and Bubble Snot) and twelve things stuck in goo — a tiny magic crystal, a worm, a mysterious golden key, slime that looks back at him, a lost sock, a rubber duck, a very surprised frog, a very grumpy fairy, a snail on holiday, the missing puzzle piece, a baby dragon egg and another wand.

Yes. Type anything into "Add your own find" and it goes in with exactly the same odds as everything else — a classmate's name, a spelling word, tonight's pudding, or something even sillier. Your own finds come out as goo in a colour of their own.

Yes. Tap any find in the list to take it out, and tap it again to put it back. He can only pull out what is in there, so it is an easy way to make a shortlist — only the goo, only the creatures, or just the three you are choosing between.

Only in the silly, cartoon way kids love. The goo is bright and magical — rainbow ribbons, glitter and sparkles — and nothing is realistic or scary. The joke is the troll: he is embarrassed, he hides the evidence badly, and he insists it is definitely not his.

It makes a great brain break or reward moment. Put names or tasks in with "Add your own find", or play the guessing game: everyone calls out what they think he will find before you press the button, and whoever guesses right gets a point.

Yes. The result is drawn before the animation starts, from a cryptographically secure generator with rejection sampling, and the shield under the stage lets you check the provably-fair receipt for every draw. The troll's acting is just theatre — the decision was already made.
